Fort Wayne Metals’ medical grade SLT® wire combines excellent straightness and torqueability, directly off the spool or when cut to length. The SLT wire process eliminates the need for mechanical straightening and heat treatments.
SLT Ultrafine Grind Wire
SLT Ultrafine Grind wire, with excellent 1:1 torque response, is designed for PTCA and neurovascular guidewires. SLT Ultrafine Grind wire, is designed for deep taper grinding e.g. a .014” SLT Ultrafine Grind wire can be transition taper ground to .002” without heat treatment. Mechanical properties are optimised to give the desired stiffness and kink resistance. SLT Ultrafine Grind wire is sold in cut lengths only.
SLT Standard Wire
SLT Standard wire is supplied as straight wire on a spool or cut to length, with excellent torque response, and suitable for shallow profile grinding. Typical applications include mandrels, corewires, stylets, suture needles, and continuous forming applications (e.g. embolic protection devices).
Fort Wayne Metals offers a range of biocompatible coatings that can be applied to SLT wire. Common coatings include polytetraflouroethylene (PTFE), ethylene tetraflouroethylene (ETFE), and perflouroalkoxy (PFA). The ratio of the diameter of the SLT Standard wire to the spool hub diameter should be less than .002 to protect the straightness and the mechanical properties of the wire.
In cases where no specification exists, the customer may find it helpful to follow this layout to create their own part number. Below is the optional part number layout:
As an example, part number SLT4V0283FH2 would describe SLT wire that is produced from alloy 304V, with a diameter of .0283", at the full hard condition, and packaged on a DIN 160 spool. In the sections listed below the corresponding letters and part number codes are described.

SLT wire can be produced in many different temper conditions, including ½ hard, ¾ hard, full hard, spring, double spring, ultra-spring, and hyten. Please note that all conditions may not be available at certain diameters.

Fort Wayne Metals offers different packaging options for SLT Wire. For spooled SLT Standard wire, the standard spool for diameters up to .022” is type DIN K355. Other spooling options are available upon request. SLT Standard wire is also available packaged as pre-cut lengths. Please contact your customer service associate for recommendations.
