Cleaning

Most strand and cable systems manufactured at Fort Wayne Metals take advantage of our stringent cleaning techniques. Individual wire elements may be cleaned prior to any stranding operation, during each stranding process step as well as the finished cable.

Strands and cables have the ability to trap contaminants once the wire filaments have been grouped together. Many of the cleaning operations are performed throughout the stranding and cabling operations. By maintaining cleanliness throughout the strand production, particulate entrapment in the cable is reduced.

We pride ourselves on removing these contaminants (oil, dirt, dust, etc.) through a variety of cleaning steps, which include:

  • hot alkaline cleaning
  • ultrasonic cleaning
  • alcohol rinse

Many of these cleaning steps are necessary prior to material passivation or any material thermal treatments the material may be subject to downstream. Materials that have been cut to length or fabricated in to assemblies at Fort Wayne Metals may be passivated.

Our technical staff will be glad to help you determine which cleaning method will work best with your application. By working with the customer to fully understand the final use of the material, the customers processing can be enhanced.
